Birthdays are the one occasion where nobody needs convincing that flowers are a good idea. The trick is not deciding whether to send them. It is landing on something that looks like the person rather than something that looks like a default.
Twinbrook Floral Design has been designing from our Chantilly studio for three generations, and we deliver free the same day across Northern Virginia and Washington DC. Here is how we think about birthday flowers.
Match the Bouquet to the Person, Not the Occasion
The most common birthday flower mistake is buying for the event instead of the recipient. A birthday is not a mood. The person is.
Somebody with a loud, funny, slightly chaotic personality should not receive a tasteful pale arrangement. They should receive something like Stay Weird, which is exactly what it sounds like. Somebody understated and elegant would rather have two dozen signature roses in a clean glass cylinder and nothing else competing with them.
For most people, though, the answer is bright and generous. Summer Sorbet and Sunset Passion both do that job without needing to know anything about the recipient beyond the fact that they are alive and it is their birthday.
When You Do Not Know Them That Well
Coworker. New in-law. Your partner’s best friend. There is a whole category of birthday where you like the person but could not name their favorite color under oath.
Go bright, go mixed, and go safe. Our birthday collection is built for this, and if you would rather hand the decision to us entirely, Designer’s Choice lets our team build whatever came in freshest that morning. Our Designer Picks are usually the best value in the shop for exactly that reason.
The Case for a Plant Instead
Cut flowers give someone a beautiful week. A plant gives them years, and every time they water it they remember who sent it.
For a person who has just moved, works from home, or simply likes green things, our plant collection is the smarter birthday gift. The Flourishing Dish Garden and The Bright Side Peace Lily both survive a good deal of neglect, which is the real test.
Roses Are Not Only for Romance
People hesitate to send roses for a birthday because they read as romantic. They do not have to. A dozen roses in a warm color, sent to a mother, a sister, or a friend, reads as generous rather than suggestive. It is the deep red that carries the romantic signal, not the flower itself.
Our rose collection runs from a petite six stem bouquet to the full two dozen. Sunny Side Up Roses are about as far from a Valentine’s bouquet as roses get.
Timing and Delivery in Northern Virginia
We deliver free the same day across Northern Virginia and DC, which means a birthday you remembered at 10am is still a birthday you can rescue. Chantilly, Fairfax, Reston, Herndon, Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Ashburn, and everywhere between.
That said, morning delivery beats evening delivery every time. Flowers that arrive before lunch shape the whole day. Flowers that arrive at 6pm arrive after the day has already happened.
If it is not a birthday but you want to send something anyway, our just because collection exists for that, and honestly it is our favorite reason to make a delivery.
